Young Catholic Adults to Meet Gov. Schwarzenegger

Young adults from across the country will meet with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger tomorrow, June 9, at 10 a.m. to discuss the ongoing problem of Catholics in public office who support the act of abortion. "This is a dedicated group of individuals who want to talk to the governor about a basic Catholic teaching: You can't be both Catholic and pro-abortion," said Joe Starrs, director of American Life League's Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church.

Because of his consistent support of abortion, Gov. Schwarzenegger has been included in American Life League's Deadly Dozen campaigns, which identify pro-abortion Catholics in public office and encourage them to recant their support of abortion or cease claiming Catholicism as their faith.

My faith makes no difference for me

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." I transcribed part of the interview from what was played today on the Laura Ingraham show which I had recorded.

GS: Your a Catholic, how do you reconcile your political positions on abortion, on gay rights, on the death penalty. There opposed to the positions of the Catholic Church - how do you reconcile that:

AS: That's easy, I never had one sleepless night over it

GS: So do I.

AS: Because it makes no difference to me I represent the people of California. The people of California not all of them are Catholics. So therefore I do not bring in my religion into this whole thing. As a matter of fact religion should have no effect on politics. If you make a decision it should not be based on religious beliefs it should be based on what is it and how can you represent the people of California the best possible way. We have a combination, we have Jews, we have Christians, we have Hindus, we have Buddhists, all kinds of different religions here and they say there is a 140 some religions in this state and I have to represent all of them and make the decisions based on what's best for the state.

GS: So your faith plays no role in the forming of your political philosophy?

AS: Not for me, there are people who do it and for me I do not make decisions based on what has, what I have learned through my Bible studies, what I have learned through my religious classes in schools or when I went to Sunday school in Austria.

I guess Arnold doesn't have to channel John Kerry since John Kerry is still alive (I am not speaking politically here), but it is a pretty close simulation of the distorted reasoning we heard on the campaign trail this year. This idea that politician have to be morally schizophrenic in a democracy. That there moral values must be locked up in one part of their brain so as to not contaminate their political actions. If we had to program Star Trek robots with this philosophy they would go into paradox meltdown as soon as you hit the on switch. With this type of logic you could not represent anyone because it is very rare (if it ever happens) to have issues where there is a one hundred percent concurrence. In almost every instance you are making a decision that goes against what some group of people believe. What is worse though is not that politicians say such nonsense, but that they can usually say it with the majority not blinking an eye or screaming in pain from a sprain due to to twisted logic.

Arnold's Base Idea Will Not Build G.O.P. Base

In an interview with the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) declared that he believes the Republican Party should move "a little further left" to attract new voters and build the G.O.P. base. "Schwarzenegger said he sees a clear line of demarcation between the Republican and Democratic Party," Jimmy Moore reports for Talon News.

"The Republican Party currently covers only the spectrum from the right wing to the middle, and the Democratic Party covers the spectrum from the left to the middle," Schwarzenegger explained in the newspaper interview. "I would like the Republican Party to cross this line, move a little further left and place more weight on the center."

"This would immediately give the [Republican] party 5 percent more votes without its losing anything elsewhere," Schwarzenegger claimed, displaying the liberal tunnel vision that typifies his Hollywood co-stars or, as Karen England, head of California's Capitol Research Institute put it, "his 'extreme arrogance and total ignorance' about the core constituents of the Republican Party."

"Schwarzenegger has spent too much time in Hollywood," England remarked in a statement. "He needs to start mingling more with mainstream Californians."

To be sure, this is scarcely "man-bites-dog" news. Since his election in 2003, Moore writes, the California governor "has openly shown his support for liberal social issues such as gay marriage and abortion, among others." No wonder pro-life, pro-family Republicans like England are upset.

We are outraged that Schwarzenegger has the audacity to misspeak for the millions of Republicans in this country who believe that abortion is murder and that the life of a child should come before the mere convenience of a woman. We are outraged that Schwarzenegger would turn his back on two-thirds of Californians, many Democrats included, who voted just four short years ago to protect traditional marriage in this state.

Writing to supporters, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said that he is "surprised when elected officials seem to forget what voters want, even when it has only been just a few weeks since an election."

Every time voters are given a chance to speak out, they vote to uphold marriage and traditional moral values. . . . Unfortunately, too many political leaders appear to be morally deaf.

Schwarzenegger is not only morally deaf; he is tone deaf politically. The United States is not Hollywood -- or even California -- and following Arnie's half-baked idea of pandering to his fellow pro-abort, pro-perversion liberals will not build the G.O.P. base. It would, however, show the door to Catholic and evangelical voters who re-elected President Bush on the basis of such moral issues as the defense of life and marriage.

"If Schwarzenegger thinks that the majority of the G.O.P. base will stick with the Republican Party on fiscal issues alone, then he has a lot to learn about the makeup of his own party," England exclaimed.

After all, even a liberal columnist like the Racine, WI, Journal Times' Rachel Campbell concedes:

Now simply isn't the time. If proud conservatives are going to go bananas every time you say "Happy holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas," you can imagine their reaction to easing restrictions on gay marriage.

Let's pray that Conan the Liberal's moldy idea stays in the fetid imagination of the Culture of Death and that the Stupid Party does not have to learn its lesson the hard way.

Another Catholic Governor Wants Millions for Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Governor Jim Doyle, wants to join fellow Catholic and governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and spend $750 Million for Embryonic Stem Cell Research in Wisconsin.

On the heels of California voters approving a $6 billion measure to finance unproven embryonic stem cell research, Wisconsin's governor wants the Badger State to spend $750 million on the controversial science. Governor Jim Doyle announced plans Wednesday to use a combination of public and private money to conduct research that would destroy human embryos to harvest their stem cells. That money would build on the nearly $1 billion the state has spent on medical research facilities over the last decade. "Other states, like California, are trying to play catch-up and build from scratch what we already have," he said. Some of the projects Doyle wants require legislative approval while others the governor can begin on his own through moving money in the state budget. The state's leading pro-life group said it will work feverishly to make sure the legislature does not approve taxpayer funding of research that destroys human life. "Wisconsin Right to Life supports the use of tax dollars for the use of ethical research which does not involve the creation and/or destruction of human life," said Barbara Lyons, Executive Director for Wisconsin Right to Life. "We will work with legislators to insure that Governor Doyle's proposal is amended to exclude unethical research."

I do not know much about Gov Doyle. I do know that Catholics in the diocese of Milwaukee have a wonderful shepard in Archbishop Dolan (I knew of him from the time I lived near St Louis) and are in need of leadership in La Crosse.

Let us pray for the four bishops in Wisconsin and all Catholics there as they battle the culture of death.
